Video Shows Aftermath Of San Francisco Crash

Written By Unknown on Senin, 08 Juli 2013 | 23.38

The dramatic evacuation of a Boeing 777 that crashed onto the runway in San Francisco has been captured on film.

Two teenagers were killed and around 180 people were injured, many of them seriously, when Asiana Airlines flight 214 slammed into the runway.

The pilot who was flying the plane when it came down had just 43 hours' experience flying that type of aircraft, aviation officials have said.

The amateur video taken immediately after the crash shows black smoke billowing from the plane as the 305 passengers and crew evacuated using the emergency inflatable chutes.

It also clearly shows that the aircraft's tail has been torn off and other parts of the plane were significantly damaged.

Air crash investigators said the crew tried to abort the landing less than two seconds before impact.

Although the captain, Lee Gang-guk, had spent nearly 10,000 hours at the controls of other planes, he had never landed at San Francisco before.

He was sitting alongside another pilot who had flown 3,200 hours in 777s and around 12,000 hours in total.

The head of the airline has described as "intolerable" media reports that pilot inexperience may have been to blame for a fatal weekend crash.

Meanwhile, officials are looking at whether one of the two teenagers killed in the crash was run over by a rescue vehicle.

It is not clear whether she died during the crash or whether she was knocked down as emergency crews rushed to the scene.

As air crash investigators continue to look for the cause of the crash, they published a series of pictures, including one taken inside the wreckage of the plane, showing oxygen masks hanging from the ceiling of the cabin and seats bent at various angles.

They have recovered both "black box" in-flight recorders from the 777, which should reveal exactly why the aircraft came down.

Deborah Hersman, head of the National Transportation Safety Board, said the plane was travelling well below its target speed of 157mph.

She said a piece of safety equipment that warns pilots of an impending stall went off moments before the crash.

Cockpit voice recordings revealed the crew's desperate attempts to climb back into the sky but did not suggest any mechanical problems.

No warnings were issued to air traffic controllers until seven seconds before impact.

Although the cause of the crash is yet to be confirmed, one theory is that the plane clipped a sea wall at the end of the runway as it came in to land.

Amateur video obtained by CNN shows the plane landing on the runway and then appearing to spin counter-clockwise before crashing down again with black smoke billowing from its tail.

The two pilots - part of a crew of 16 - had around 22,000 flying hours between them.

There were 291 passengers on board, many of whom were Chinese.

Mos Def Aka Yasiin Bey In Force-Feeding Film

The actor and rapper best known as Mos Def agreed to be force-fed on camera as part of a campaign in aid of Guantanamo Bay hunger strikers.

A four-minute film shows medics forcing a plastic tube through the shackled star's nose and towards his stomach.

The process can take 30 minutes, but in the end Yasiin Bey - as he is now known - is unable to undergo the full procedure and is heard pleading with doctors to "stop, please stop".

The 39-year-old says afterwards: "The first part of it is not that bad but then you get this burning and it starts to be really unbearable, like something is going into my brain and it reaches the back of my throat.

"I really couldn't take it."

The film, directed by Bafta award-winning filmmaker Asif Kapadia, was launched by the human rights organisation Reprieve as the US government comes under pressure to stop force-feeding Guantanamo detainees during the holy month of Ramadan.

The US has rejected a petition by four of more than 100 detainees said to be refusing food, saying the feedings provide "essential nutritional and medical care" and would not interfere with Ramadan.

Lawyers for the men have described the tube feeding as "barbaric" and have sought assurances that detainees will not be force-fed during daylight hours, when observant Muslims fast.

According to court papers, there are 166 detainees at Guantanamo and 106 of them are on hunger strike over their continued detention without trial.

Of those, 45 are being fed through tubes directly into the stomach.

President Barack Obama has pledged to work towards closing the detention camp on Cuba, which was established in the months after 9/11 to hold terror suspects.

Human rights organisations have attacked its use as a military prison following reports that detainees have been tortured.

Bull Terrier 'Bites Head Off Harmless Pet'

Police have seized a Staffordshire bull terrier which allegedly bit the head off a family pet dog in a vicious attack.

Gemma Antell claimed her pet Pomeranian, Elvis, was decapitated outside the home of her mother-in-law in Warrington on Saturday after the larger dog entered the front garden, dragging its handler behind it.

Gemma Antell Ms Antell says her family were left traumatised by the attack

After the attack on Elvis, a member of the public took a picture of the Staffordshire bull terrier and the woman holding its leash, whose arm was covered in blood.

Gemma posted the picture onto Twitter in an attempt to identify the owner.

"The dog literally ripped his head off," Ms Antell said in a post on Facebook. "It ripped Elvis in half. It is my son's birthday and my kids are in tears and my whole family are traumatised.

"The worst part of this is the dog 'owners' witnessed the attack and just walked off saying it was not their fault.

"Two poor children witnessed the attack as well as my mother-in-law and passers-by. I have added (to Facebook) the two photos of the incident as well as photos of poor Elvis who is obviously a tiny harmless family pet.

"The next time this happens it might not be a family pet it could be a local child!!!"

After the owner was identified, police visited an address at midnight on Sunday where they seized a white Staffordshire bull terrier.

Cheshire police have confirmed they are investigating the incident and have asked for witnesses to call them on 101 or to ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Chief Inspector Darren Hebden, said: "This was a horrendous attack and was clearly very distressing for the owners to witness.

"I am aware of pictures that have been circulated on social media which will undoubtedly cause concern for the community but can I reassure people that we have now seized the offending dog so there is no risk to the general public.

"We will be speaking to the owners in due course and will do all we can to deal with the incident appropriately within the guidelines of the law. Extra patrols will be in the area to talk to concerned residents and address any issues in the area."

San Francisco Crash Survivors Tell Of Horror

Survivors have spoken of the terrifying moment a pilot tried to abort a landing seconds before it crashed onto the runway in San Francisco.

Two Chinese teenagers died after the Asiana Airlines Boeing 777 struck the runway shortly after the jet reportedly hit a sea wall.

Benjamin Levy said: "The nose of the plane, as you know, goes up a little bit. And then full throttle starts hitting hard and then we felt that we were going up again, so that's why I said maybe the guy is about to pull one of those almost mislandings and go back up.

"But it didn't happen, we just crashed back. So as I say - if we flipped, none of us would be here to talk about it."

Xu Da, a product manager from China, was sitting with his wife and teenage son near the back of the plane.

He stood up and saw a gaping hole through the back of the plane where its galley was torn away along with the tail.

Xu and his family escaped through the opening. Once on the tarmac, they watched the plane catch fire, and firefighters hose it down.

In the chaotic moments after the landing, Wen Zhang grabbed her four-year-old son, who hit the seat in front of him and broke his leg.

Spotting a hole at the back of the jumbo jet where the bathroom had been, she carried her boy to safety.

"I had no time to be scared," she said.

Eugene Rah said: "The seat I was sitting in, it has one more strap coming across my chest here in addition to the one that goes around the waist because It was a sleeper seat. If I did not have that, I would have hit the ceiling: that's how hard the impact was."

Fred Hayes filmed the crash from around a mile away "I was watching it come in and I did notice that nose being up in the air. My initial reaction was that it was trying to abort the landing and go back up," he told CNN.

"There was big boom and then it pitched forward and bounced off its nose."

One of the flight attendants described the chaos as she and her colleagues began their evacuation of more than 300 people.

Sky's Asia correspondent Mark Stone said Lee Yoon Hae told South Korean media that she first went to the cockpit to see if the pilots were alive. She then made three announcements telling the 291 passengers to remain calm and prepare to evacuate.

There were four pilots on the plane: two in the cockpit and two more reserve pilots in the main cabin. One of the reserve pilots opened the front door with an axe and ordered the evacuation.

Plane crash Video showed hundreds of people running down emergency chutes

Stone said Mrs Lee, 40, explained how one of her colleagues had a leg trapped. She helped to release her leg and at the same time tried to calm the passengers, some of whom were panicking.

Mrs Lee said that many of the passengers were confused and disorientated.

She shouted to the Chinese passengers to evacuate immediately. Many of them tried to take their hand baggage with them, but she said she was forced to order them not to.

Mrs Lee said several fires broke out within the cabin and she was not aware that the tail of the plane had broken off because the ceiling between her and the rear of the aircraft had collapsed.

She helped one badly injured female passenger to the emergency slide and then returned back into the aircraft to help others and was one of the last to leave the aircraft.

Mrs Lee, who has already been given 14 awards for her work at Asiana Airlines, broke her coccyx in the accident, but was unaware of her injuries until she arrived at the hospital.

Britain To Bask In 30C Sunshine At Weekend

The shorts and T-shirt weather is here to stay with forecasters predicting the mercury will hit 30C in some places this weekend.

Andy Murray became Wimbledon champion on the hottest day of the year so far, and the temperatures look like they will climbing again next Saturday.

Temperatures reached 29C at Heathrow and Kew Gardens in London on Sunday, with much of the rest of the country also enjoying warm sunshine.

Beaches up and down the country were also packed, leading to more than 250 call-outs to the coastguard.

Sky News weather forecaster Isobel Lang said cloud would move in mid-week, lowering temperatures to the mid to low-20s.

But a "high will build again through this coming weekend and temperatures will rise up again, probably to 30 or 31C", she added.

Lang said it would be a fine, very warm week, but cloud might affect northern and western parts at times.

The dry, sunny weather will be welcomed by cricket fans with England's first Ashes test against Australia getting under way at Trent Bridge on Wednesday.

The T In The Park music festival also begins in Kinross-shire in Scotland on Friday.

Forecasters have previously said this July is set to be one of the warmest since 2006 when a fortnight-long heatwave brought temperatures of over 30C.

But the fine weather claimed its first life on Saturday after a boy died while swimming in a disused quarry in Worcestershire.

The boy, who has not yet been named, failed to resurface after swimming in Gullet Quarry near Malvern, with police warning against swimming in rivers, lakes and canals.

And on Sunday night South Wales Police and coastguards were searching for a 14-year-old girl who was last seen "in difficulty" in the sea at Whitmore Bay, Barry Island.

Naked UK Fugitive Found In Villa Panic Room

One of Britain's most wanted men has been caught hiding naked in a panic room at his luxury Spanish villa.

Convicted drug trafficker Mark Lilley was captured when more than 40 armed officers smashed their way into the house in Malaga.

Officers were unable to get into his panic room, but he surrendered when he realised there was no escape.

He had rushed to the sealed room - hidden behind a wardrobe in his bedroom - after dogs he kept in his garden began barking, alerting him to the dawn raid on Saturday.

Lilley, who went on the run in 2000 when he skipped bail during his trial, was able to watch the raid unfolding with a computer linked to CCTV cameras.

Footage of the operation shows officers climbing over a gate before running to Lilley's front door and breaking it down with a battering a ram.

Mark Lilley was found hiding in a panic room by officers who came to arrest him. Lilley in a mugshot taken years ago

He is seen being handcuffed with a strip of cloth wrapped around his waist.

A police helicopter hovered above the villa in the Alhurin de la Torre area during the raid, which was a joint operation by the Spanish National Police and Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca).

A handgun was recovered.

Extradition proceedings have begun to return Lilley to the UK.

After going on the run, Lilley, 41, from Warrington, Cheshire, was given a 23-year prison sentence in his absence for masterminding a large-scale drug operation and firearm offences.

Dave Allen, head of the fugitives unit at Soca, said: "Lilley was a dangerous man with access to firearms. He had evaded capture for a long time by moving around Spain and using false identities.

"My message for other fugitives on the run is a simple one - we will hunt you down and you will face justice for your crimes."

Roger Critchell, director of operations at Crimestoppers, said: "We are extremely relieved that this dangerous drug dealer has been arrested and will be made to face justice."

Lilley was the 51st suspect located out of 65 wanted by Operation Captura officers.

Anyone with information about fugitives can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Egypt: Morsi Supporters Shot Dead At Barracks

At least 51 people have been killed in violence outside the headquarters of the Republican Guard in Cairo, according to the head of Egypt's emergency services.

Mohamed Sultan said a further 435 people were wounded in the attack, which the military said began when "a terrorist group" tried to storm the building.

The military said supporters of former president Mohamed Morsi attacked the Egyptian army premises with "heavy gunfire," but the Muslim Brotherhood claim their supporters were fired upon and "massacred" by the army while praying outside the building.

It is believed Mr Morsi is being held at the army premises in the wake of his ouster last week.

Army Col. Ahmed Mohammed Ali told a news conference that two policemen and an army officer were killed in the violence, adding that another 42 troops were injured.

EGYPT-POLITICS-UNREST The clashes began just before dawn outside the barracks

The military added that two of its officers were killed in the dawn clashes at the army base. The claims from both sides have not been independently verified.

At a news conference held in Cairo, Egypt's military said it is operating on behalf of all the country's citizens.

But Murad Ali, of the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, said the shooting broke out while the Islamists had been staging a sit-in outside the barracks.

Some witnesses, including Brotherhood supporters at the scene, said the armed forces fired only warning shots and tear gas, and that "thugs" in civilian clothes approached from the side before carrying out the deadly shooting.

"The Republican Guard fired tear gas, but the thugs came from the side. We were the target," said Mahmud al Shilli, a Muslim Brotherhood protester.

"I saw with my own eyes the people who they shot at," another protester said, adding that several people had been injured.

Speaking to Sky's Sam Kiley, one witness said Morsi supporters were attacked from the side and that the army fired the first shots.

"They fired tear gas and live bullets, we saw several people drop dead in the street. The attack came from the other side.

"(The protesters) were not doing any harm. They were just making some prayers and singing songs; many of them are from outside Cairo.

"I saw two guys drop on the floor, I don't know if they were dead or not. There were live bullets because we have learnt to know the sound of live bullets as opposed to pellets."

On Friday at the same spot, four Islamists were shot dead by soldiers.

Egypt's ultra-conservative Islamist Nour party said it had withdrawn from negotiations to form a new interim government "in response to the massacre outside the Republican Guard headquarters".

The country's interim administration expressed "deep regret" for those killed. A released statement said the deaths were the result of an attempt by protesters to storm the Republican Guard headquarters.

The transitional administration also said it had formed a judicial committee to investigate the events. The statement called on protesters not to approach any military or "other vital installations".

The armed forces overthrew President Morsi last Wednesday, backed by massive street demonstrations. Muslim Brotherhood supporters have been staging daily protests ever since.

Britain called for movement toward free and fair elections and agreement on a democratic constitution, and called on Egyptian authorities to carry out an investigation into the events that led to the deaths.

"There is an urgent need for calm and restraint," said Foreign Secretary William Hague.

The European Union condemned the killings and said it was keeping its billions of Euros in aid pledged to the country "under constant review".

"We are doing all that we can through talking to everyone on the ground to make sure everyone understands the need for peace to be maintained," Michael Mann, spokesman for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, said at a routine press briefing.

Barry Island: Missing Teen Is Holly McClymont

A teenage schoolgirl who went missing after getting into difficulty in the sea at a busy resort in Wales has been named.

Police say Holly McClymont, 14, from Glasgow, was visiting Barry Island with her family when she went missing on Sunday afternoon.

Rescue crews started looking for Holly after friends saw her struggling in the water at Whitmore Bay, police said.

But it is believed she may have been in trouble up to an hour before the first emergency call was made at about 3.45pm.

Three lifeboats, a police helicopter and an RAF search and rescue helicopter joined the search.

A police spokesman said: "Holly McClymont, aged 14, from Glasgow, was last seen by friends in difficulty in the sea on Sunday.

"The incident was reported to a PCSO patrolling Barry Island and enquiries have been continuing to locate Holly who was in Barry visiting family.

Holly is described as white, 5ft 7ins tall, of average build, with long black hair dyed red.

She was last seen wearing a multi-coloured floral dress, described as short at the front and longer at the back.

The coastguard has expressed disbelief that the alarm was not raised sooner when the girl disappeared.

"We are dumbfounded that something wasn't said to us earlier and are investigating but our main priority is the search," Steve Jones, rescue centre manager for HM Coastguard Swansea, said.

Search for missing girl on Barry Island, South Wales Police have appealed for help from anyone who saw Holly

Superintendent Marc Lamerton, based at Barry Police Station, has appealed for information from the public.

"Our last sighting of Holly is at around 2.45pm in the sea, in the part of the bay nearest the Island Leisure Amusement arcade, Western Shelter, Barry Island," he said.

"While the focus of the search is at sea we are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen Holly yesterday.

"Barry Island was extremely busy and we would appeal for anyone with information to contact South Wales Police on 101.

"This is obviously a very worrying time for Holly's family and we are keeping them updated."

Searching the sea around the area where she went missing was made a priority on Sunday, but parallel police inquiries were made on land.

Police checked the address where she was staying and spoke to Holly's friends who had been in the water with her.

Police hoped she would be found on dry land despite search efforts being concentrated on the sea.

Despite the ongoing search, hundreds of holidaymakers were not deterred from going back in the sea off the same beach.

Barry resident Sue Voss said locals were aware of the potential dangers of the sea and knew that tides could be treacherous.

"The tides are dangerous here, you can get pulled out to sea. That is why you should always stay between the red and yellow flags," she said.

"If you are from somewhere inland it is easy to think that there is no danger. On a sunny day it all looks so inviting."

She said a friend lost her dog several years ago when it went into the sea at nearby Knap beach and was washed away by currents.

Whitmore Bay is part of an enclosed stretch of coastline although the tidal range - the difference between high and low tide - is one of the highest in the world.

Archbishop Welby: We Will Have Women Bishops

By Gerard Tubb, North of England Correspondent

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has insisted that the Church of England will allow women to become bishops.

Speaking at the Church of England's ruling General Synod he said the debate was now about how the change should be brought about.

"This is not about whether, but about how," he told the meeting in York.

The Archbishop said the church was moving in "a clear general direction" which was "the best way forward".

At the end of the debate the three houses of the Synod - bishops, clergy and laity - passed a motion to "reaffirm its commitment to admitting women to the episcopate as a matter of urgency".

The General Synod of the Church of England. The General Synod of the Church of England

A steering group will now be set up to draw up draft legislation which could result in the first women bishops being ordained in 2016.

The group's findings will be debated in November in London with a final vote on the matter expected in July or November 2015.

Attempts to approve women bishops failed to pass one of the three houses of the Synod in November last year after bishops and clergy approved the change, but less than two-thirds of the House of Laity agreed.

The new scheme makes allowances for traditionalists who oppose women bishops, but means there will no longer be any dioceses where none of the serving bishops ordains women as priests.

Under the plan, the bishops would be asked to draw up arrangements for opponents.

Andy Murray: Wimbledon Champ Takes Tea At No 10

New Wimbledon champion Andy Murray has been celebrating his historic win with tea in Downing Street.

He was greeted on the steps of Number 10 by David Cameron who wasted no time in shaking his hand.

Earlier the Prime Minister fuelled speculation the 26-year-old could be in line for a knighthood.

"I can't think of anyone who deserves one more," he declared.

Andy Murray and girlfriend Kim Sears Andy Murray and Kim Sears arrive for the post-tournament party in Park Lane

Murray has said his first victory in the men's singles final on Sunday was a "huge release of tension and pressure".

He told Sky News he had only slept for about an hour and a half after the champions' ball.

"I feel very relaxed today. There was a huge release of tension and pressure yesterday," said Murray.

"Once I get back on the match court I'll feel how much more relaxed I am out there, or preparing for big events."

Murray admitted he was still in a daze after his straight sets win against Novak Djokovic.

"I only slept for an hour and a half last night so I was pretty beat up when I woke up. But it's a beautiful day to wake up as Wimbledon champion."

He also paid tribute to the "unbelievable" support he received from the Centre Court crowd and people watching around the country.

Murray's triumph drew the highest television audience of the year so far, with a peak audience of 17.3 million tuning in despite the sunny weather.

The Scotsman - the first British men's champion at SW19 since Fred Perry in 1936 - partied on Sunday night at the traditional end-of-tournament event in central London.

He was joined by his girlfriend Kim Sears, his mother and father, Judy and William, as well as several of the VIPs who watched him defeat Serbia's Djokovic on Centre Court.

Beforehand Murray, celebrating his second Grand Slam victory, said his success would "take a little while to sink in" and admitted: "I don't really know what to say just now."

"Winning Wimbledon, I think, is the pinnacle of tennis," he added.

Marion Bartoli, the winner of the women's final, also attended the party at a hotel in Park Lane.

The 28-year-old French number one appeared to joke about comments made by BBC commentator John Inverdale, who suggested she was "never going to be a looker".

Speaking to Sky's Stephen Douglas, she said: "How do I look?"

Murray squandered three championship points in a hard fought final game before beating Djokovic 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 - a win David Cameron said had made Britain "proud".

"I worked so hard in that last game," he said in a post-match press conference. "It's the hardest few points I've had to play in my life ... I still can't believe it."

Murray leapt onto the roof of the commentary box on Centre Court to celebrate with his family, friends and coaching staff.

There was a hug for his girlfriend and a long embrace for coach Ivan Lendl, a former world number one who twice missed out on the Wimbledon title.

Murray almost forgot his mother, who was sitting just behind the players' box, before returning to hug her too.

In a Twitter message retweeted more than 87,000 times, Murray said: "Can't believe what's just happened!"

The champion's grandparents, Roy and Shirley Erskine, who celebrated at a sports club in Dunblane, said the atmosphere in Murray's hometown was "tremendous".

"We were telling him what wonderful support there was up here, " Shirley Erskine told Sky News.

Grandfather Roy said he did not think Andy would not let his historic success and all the extra attention go to his head.

"I don't think Andy will change in any way," he said.

"I think he will still be very committed to his tennis - he doesn't know anything else. It's been his way of life for the last 11 years."

Andy Murray winning Wimbledon Reaction in Dunblane Dunblane celebrates the sporting triumph of its famous son

Murray now has less than two months to prepare for the US Open - the title he won in 2012 in a thrilling five-set encounter with Djokovic that lasted nearly five hours.

It is not yet known whether he is planning to return to Dunblane, where he took an open-top bus tour in front of 20,000 people last summer to celebrate his Olympic and US Open titles.

Fans packed themselves into the town's community centre as well as Murray's former tennis club to see their favourite son lift the Wimbledon trophy in only his second Centre Court final.

Meanwhile, marketing experts have predicted Murray could become the third highest-earning British sportsman of all time.

He is expected to land a raft of new sponsorship deals and could be in line to earn up to £15m a year.

His manager, Simon Fuller, said only a World Cup win for England's footballers could match the enormity of his Wimbledon triumph.

"I think that by winning Olympic gold, the US Open and Wimbledon, he's proved himself to be a true champion. Anything's possible," he said.
