Tata Motors Boss Karl Slym In 'Suicide Jump'

Police are treating the death of the British managing director of Tata Motors as a suspected suicide.

Investigators in Thailand say there are no signs of foul play after Karl Slym, 51, fell from a hotel room window in Bangkok on Sunday.

Mr Slym was staying on the 22nd floor of the Shangri-La Hotel with his wife after attending a board meeting in the Thai capital.

Hotel staff found his body on the fourth floor and a three-page note was later discovered by police.

Lieutenant Somyot Boonyakaew, who is heading the investigation, said: "We didn't find any sign of a struggle.

"We found a window open. The window was very small so it was not possible that he would have slipped.

"He would have had to climb through the window to fall out because he was a big man. From my initial investigation we believe he jumped."

Thai police were called to the hotel at about 7.45am on Sunday after staff found Mr Slym's body.

They woke his wife, who is reported to have looked shocked when she was told what had happened.

A post-mortem examination on the body should begin later on Monday.

Mr Slym, originally from Derby, was hired by India's largest car maker in 2012 to revive flagging sales and market share in the country.

Anil Sharma, an analyst with researchers IHS Automotive, said: "His death comes at a time when the company seems to be close to turning the corner.

"It comes before his efforts bear fruit. We should be able to see the results in a year or two."

Worried investors sent shares in Tata Motors down as much as 6.7% at one point on Monday in a broader market that fell more than 2%. The stock ended 6% lower.

Tata chairman Cyrus P Mistry said: "(Mr Slym was) a valued colleague who was providing strong leadership at a challenging time for the Indian auto industry.

"In this hour of grief, our thoughts are with Karl's wife and family."

Crocodiles Shot In Search For Boy In Australia

By Jonathan Samuels, Australia Correspondent

Two crocodiles have been shot and their stomachs opened as the search continues for a missing boy who is feared dead after being taken by one of the creatures.

Police believe the boy was attacked by the reptile and taken away in a waterhole in the country's Northern Territory on Sunday.

He was swimming with friends in the Mudginberri Billabong in Kakadu National Park when they were attacked by the saltwater crocodile.

One of the boy's friends was bitten on the arm as he tried to fight the creature off.

Searches by air, land and boat continued into Monday morning around Magela Creek, which feeds the waterhole, but there has so far been no sign of the child.

A trap was set in the creek late on Monday and rangers are preparing to search the waterways by boat through the night again, although efforts will be scaled back.

Flooding due to the local monsoon season is complicating the search; the 200-metre waterway is now more than a kilometre (0.62 miles) wide.

Any crocodile longer than two metres (6.5ft) spotted in the Mudginberri Outstation can be shot.

AUSTRALIA CROCODILE SALWATER Saltwater crocodiles are common in northern Australia.

The order was expanded from the original three metres after an examination of the bite marks on the boy's friend.

No human remains were found in the two crocodiles.

Sergeant Stephen Constable said earlier said there had not been a "croc attack around here for quite a long time".

He said: "But crocodiles are prevalent in these waters and you always have to be careful."

A spokesman for the park said the area was well signposted as a danger zone for crocodiles.

He said: "We have big croc warning signs with croc jaws and a big thing saying 'croc risk; do not swim here, do not enter'."

Saltwater crocodiles can grow to be up to seven metres and weigh more than a ton.

They are a common feature in the tropical north of Australia.

Their population has increased steadily since the introduction of laws protecting them in 1971.

Government estimates put their numbers at between 75,000 and 100,000.

The most recent fatality was in August last year, when 27-year-old Darwin man Sean Cole was taken by a 4.7-metre croc as he swam across the Mary River.

Following the latest incident the local Aboriginal people, the Mirarr, called for a cull of the reptiles around Jabiru.

Justin O'Brien, chief of the Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation, said: "Mirrar traditional owners are saying (it's) high time to cull crocodiles."

Researchers in the country launched the world's first crocodile attack database, CrocBITE, in December.

The team, which is based at Charles Darwin University, hopes to find evidence to back up reports that attacks are on the increase.

Sunday's attack is the 11th fatality recorded this year by the team - five of them involving saltwater crocodiles.

Labour's 50p Tax Rate 'Very Bad For Economy'

David Cameron has said it would be "very bad" for the economy if Labour's proposed increase to the top rate of tax to 50% were to go ahead.

The Prime Minister's comments come after 24 heads of industry - including the former chairman of Marks & Spencer Sir Stuart Rose - criticised the move by shadow chancellor Ed Balls.

The 50p - or 50% - "additional rate" tax, which is payable on income above £150,000, was cut to 45% in April last year.

Mr Cameron says lowering the tax rate was "the right thing to do".

"What George Osborne and I did was right for the economy but politically difficult. Labour are now doing something that is politically convenient but very, very bad for the economy," he said.

Labour Annual Conference 2013 Senior business figures have been quick to slam Ed Balls' plan

Mr Cameron has described the 50p tax rate as an "anti-business, anti-growth, anti-enterprise" measure.

But shadow business secretary Chuka Umunna disagrees with Mr Cameron, telling Sky News: "Essentially his argument is that rich people, more wealthy people, in our country will work harder if you cut their taxes and yet he has put the taxes up for everybody else by, for example, whacking up VAT at the start of his premiership and cutting benefits for in-work families."

And Mr Balls told the BBC that the Prime Minister and Chancellor George Osborne "know in their heart of hearts they can't justify a massive tax cut to the richest when everybody else is worse off and paying more tax".

"I think a fair approach to deficit reduction means those with the broadest shoulders need to bear their share of the burden," he said.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF MARKS & SPENCER ROSE IS SEEN BEFORE COMPANY AGM IN LONDON. Sir Stuart Rose led Marks & Spencer for six years

"I don't think this is an anti-business move, I don't think it's bad for Britain. I think it is a fair way to get the deficit down."

The comments come as the 24 senior business figures wrote an open letter to the Daily Telegraph criticising the 50p tax rate, warning it would halt the economy's recovery and cost jobs.

The letter's signatories include Sir Stuart, West Ham United vice chairman Karren Brady, billionaire businessman Richard Caring and Kingfisher chief executive Sir Ian Cheshire.

"We think that these higher taxes will have the effect of discouraging business investment in the UK," the letter said.

Karren Brady's CBE is for services to entrepreneurship and women in business Karren Brady is also a signatory

"This is a backwards step which would put the economic recovery at risk and would very quickly lead to the loss of jobs in Britain."

Sky's Political Correspondent Anushka Asthana has said of the letter: "Labour will tell you that one in three of the figures are Tory donors, with one - Karren Brady - even introducing the Chancellor at the party's annual conference. Still, they know it's news.

"And though they may be a little taken aback by the strength of the attacks former Labour figures, they won't be that surprised that they oppose the policy.

"Mr Balls has made a simple political calculation: that ordinary voters will not share the views of wealthy business leaders. And he may be right."

New Jersey Driver 'Beaten' As Car Stuck In Snow

A man in New Jersey has told police he was beaten unconscious by two men asking for money after his car got stuck in the snow.

The man said he got stuck on Sunday morning as he tried to enter the car park of a local business.

As he attempted to free his car, two men and a woman approached him to ask for money. When he told them he had nothing, the men beat him, according to the Press of Atlantic City.

He told police that his wallet had been stolen and that he went to hospital with minor injuries.

The reported attack came as a cold snap continues to grip much of the nation. Forecasters are predicting freezing cold at Sunday's Super Bowl, which is held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Meanwhile, the Midwest also braced for severe wind chills and freezing temperatures. Travel has already been disrupted and many schools forced to close.

Temperatures are expected to be well below zero but with wind chills the temperature will be pushed even lower. Forecasters expect -43F (-41C) in Minneapolis, -23F (-30C) in Chicago, -18F (-27C) in Dayton, Ohio, -14F (-25C) in Kansas City, Missouri.

Ice and strong winds were making roads treacherous.

In Indiana, where 50mph gusts were recorded early on Monday, officials recommended only essential travel in many areas of the state.

Michigan expressways closed as snow and sub-freezing temperatures played a role in multiple crashes on Sunday.

At least three people died over the weekend because of weather-related accidents.

The Chicago Public Schools called off Monday's classes for its nearly 400,000 students.

Freezing temperatures are expected to hold into Tuesday.

Jude Law Relative 'Sold Stories To NOTW'

Jude Law has told a court he was unaware that a close family member was being paid by a newspaper to leak information about his private life.

The actor was giving evidence at the phone hacking trial at the Old Bailey.

The 41-year-old was questioned by former News Of The World (NOTW) editor Andy Coulson's lawyer, Timothy Langdale QC, about a story in 2005 about his then-girlfriend Sienna Miller having an affair with actor Daniel Craig.

Asked if he was aware at any time that a member of his "immediate family" was talking to the NOTW, he said: "I was aware later around 2011, maybe later than that, at the time I was approached about the case that the NOTW had been in contact with people in my family, trying to find things out, asking for quotes."

The lawyer wrote down a name of a source on a piece of paper to show the witness. The name was not read in court.

Asked if he knew the family member was getting paid, he said: "I have never been aware of that, getting paid for it."

Jude Law Law arriving at the Old Bailey on Monday

The first he knew of that was today, in the court, he said.

He told the court he first became aware of rumours of the affair around the time the couple went to Miller's sister Savanah's wedding in the West Country and Law was shown NOTW articles headlined "Sienna Cheats On Jude" and "Layer Fake".

He told the court he had telephoned Craig to confront him about the affair and suggested he should tell his own girlfriend about it.

But he could not remember whether that was before or after the paper broke the story and he had not left a voicemail about it.

Asked if he was aware that anyone around him was leaking stories, he said: "No, I did not know that anyone around me was talking to the newspapers, although I suspected it because there was such a flow of information ... I suspected many people over that period of time."

Former News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks arrives at the Old Bailey courthouse in London Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson deny conspiring to hack phones

Law told the court that the media had "an unhealthy amount of information" about his life.

The actor said press attention intensified after his Oscar nomination for The Talented Mr Ripley in 2001 and photographers would follow him around, even when he made social plans in secret.

He told the court the intrusion grew throughout his divorce from Sadie Frost and then during his relationship with his Alfie co-star Miller.

Sitting in the witness box, Law said: "There seemed to be an unhealthy amount of information that people, or someone, had that meant they had access to my life and my whereabouts."

He said when police showed him notes that private investigator Glenn Mulcaire held about him, he "was shocked to see the amount of information that had been accumulated", but he added: "Sadly it didn't surprise me because it seemed apparent from what had been written (in the press)."

Law told the jury that from around 2001 photographers would gather at his home.

"Around 2001 and over the following four or five years the daily appearance of packs of photographers either on the street or in cars became a very regular occurrence."

He added: "I became aware that I was also turning up at places having arranged to go there secretly ... and the media were already there, or photographers were already there."

Also giving evidence at the trial on Monday was tabloid reporter Daniel Evans who admitted phone hacking at the Sunday Mirror and the NOTW.

He told the court he was involved in hacking at the Sunday Mirror for about a year and a half from 2003 but it had been going on long before that.

He told the court he had been approached by a journalist to join the NOTW in 2005 but initially he did not want a job there to be the journalist's "pet phone hacker" when he wanted to do more investigations work.

Evans said he had met Coulson and told him he "did stuff with phones" and that Coulson understood what the context of it was.

Coulson and Rebekah Brooks deny conspiring to hack phones and commit misconduct in a public office.

The trial continues.

Justin Bieber 'Driving Charges Dropped'

Charges against Justin Bieber for driving under the influence and driving without a valid license appear to have been dropped by a court in Miami.

It comes after the 19 year old was arrested in the early hours of January 23 while driving a rented yellow Lamborghini at twice the speed limit.

The Canadian singer is said to have failed a sobriety test and admitted to having drunk a beer, taken a prescription drug and smoked marijuana.

After spending time in a jail cell he was charged with driving under the influence of drink or drugs, driving without a valid license and resisting arrest. His bail was set at $2,500 (£1,500) before his release.

However, according to documents on the Miami-Dade County Court Clerk's website, Bieber appears to now only be charged with resisting arrest without violence.

The teenager jetted out of Miami after his arrest and has been photographed in Panama over the past few days.

It is believed his manager Scooter Braun and mentor Usher have flown to Panama to speak to the singer about concerns they have over his recent behaviour.

Bieber was due to appear in court back in Miami at 8.30am on Monday morning.

Police chief Raymond Martinez said the star was "belligerent" when asked to get out of the car and that his movements had been "slow" and "deliberate" during his arrest.

Bieber was arrested alongside his friend, the R&B artist Khalil, who had been driving a red Ferrari when they were stopped.

Egypt Army Backs Head To Run For President

Egypt's top military body has approved of army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi running for the presidency, state media reports.

Sisi, who ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi last July after mass street protests, could officially announce his candidacy within hours, the official news agency MENA reported.

In order to stand the 59-year-old will have to resign from his job as defence minister and from the military.

Earlier on Monday, the country's interim president Adly Mansour issued a decree elevating Sisi to the position of field marshal, a move seen as paving the way for a presidential bid.

The report came after MENA reported the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces had met to "discuss developments on the security front ... [and] the peoples' demand for the defence minister [Sisi] to run for the presidency".

The state-run Al-Ahram newspaper claimed the group also named Chief of Staff Sedki Sobhi to replace Sisi as army chief and defence minister when he steps down.

The election is due to be held by mid-April and will be followed by parliamentary elections. Sisi, if he wins, is expected to influence the outcome of those elections by forming a party that would attract candidates.

His popularity has increased in line with the perception he is the strongman needed to end violence and instability that has plagued Egypt since 2011 and the fall of President Hosni Mubarak.

But the general faces a determined opposition and semi-insurgency in the country.

More than 1,000 people have been killed in Egypt since the overthrow of Morsi, including dozens of members of the security forces.

Over the weekend at least 49 people were killed in clashes between Islamist protesters and police, as thousands rallied in the capital Cairo to mark the third anniversary of the revolution that overthrew President Hosni Mubarak.

Five soldiers were killed on Saturday when a military helicopter came down in the Sinai. Al-Qaeda-inspired jihadist group Ansar Beit al-Maqdis claimed it shot down the aircraft with a missile, but the authorities said it was an accident.

The group also claimed responsibility for a car bombing outside the police headquarters in Cairo on Friday that killed four people.

Also on Monday, Deputy Prime Minister Ziad Bahaa El-Din resigned in a post on his Facebook page. He is seen as one of the few in the Cabinet who have attempted to limit the crackdown on Morsi's supporters and promote reconciliation with Islamists.

The statement said: "[Bahaa El-Din] indeed tendered a written resignation from his ministerial position to the prime minister this morning so he can resume his political, party and legal activity outside the government."

Paterson: Flood Victims 'Right' To Be Angry

Environment Secretary Owen Paterson has admitted the Government could have done more to help residents in parts of the country worst-affected by flooding - and that dredging of some rivers in the county should have happened.

Heavy rain is forecast for flood-hit areas, with some communities in Somerset - where the council has declared a "major incident" - facing a fourth week under water.

Elsewhere, motorists and commuters have been warned of ice, sleet and snow with temperatures expected to plummet to around freezing in some parts of the UK.

Mr Paterson has today visited Northmoor Green in Somerset, where he held crisis talks with council chiefs and farmers whose crops have been devastated by the recent stormy weather.

Flood warnings and alerts in England and Wales The Environment Agency's flood alerts and warnings

Facing tough questions from furious locals on the official response to the flooding, Mr Paterson told Sky News: "How shocking it is for people to be flooded and I really do appreciate the impact floods have had on people ... they are quite right to be angry."

He acknowledged the national guidelines on dredging were not appropriate for the Somerset Levels, large parts of which are below sea level.

In defence of the Environment Agency, Mr Paterson said it had protected a million homes and was "working incredibly hard".

He said he had asked local officials to present him with "a very clear action plan" within six weeks to enable him "to make a categoric decision once and for all" on a "long-term serious plan" for the area for the next 20 years.

Several counties including Hampshire and Dorset also remain at risk of flooding, while further snowfall is expected across Wales, Scotland and northern England.

The Environment Agency has issued more than 140 flood alerts and 10 more serious flood warnings across England and Wales.

John Osman, leader of Somerset County Council, said he was "hugely disappointed" there would be no immediate extra funding to protect flood-hit communities.

"We will continue to keep the pressure on to secure a fair deal for Somerset's residents," he said.

Bryony Sadler, of Flooding on the Somerset Levels Action Group (FLAG), dismissed Mr Paterson's visit as a "publicity stunt".

A dusting of snow over the Northern Pennines Snowfall over Middleton-in-Teesdale

"It was a waste of taxpayers' money," the hairdresser said. "We are here, we have lived like this - like a third world country - for three weeks. We have just pushed and pushed and pushed.

"It is all just a great show for the cameras, isn't it? No-one is listening to what we want to say. It is very depressing, it is very negative."

Matthew Lay, national officer of Unison, said: "Communities up and down the country will remain in danger until the Environment Agency is given adequate resources and funding to prevent and handle disasters caused by floods."

Fourteen serious flood warnings are in place for parts of the South West, South East, Midlands and North East with the Environment Agency advising people in affected areas to take immediate action.

The Somerset Levels, which run south from the Mendip Hills to the Blackdown Hills, are particularly vulnerable with 31,000 acres under water, as further heavy rain falls on already saturated ground.

There is also potential for further river flooding across the South West and southern counties including parts of Wiltshire, Dorset, Hampshire, West Sussex, West Berkshire and Surrey into next week.

The Environment Agency is running more than 60 pumps around the clock to drain an estimated 65 million cubic metres of floodwater from the Levels.

A temporary pontoon has been erected near the village of Langport to allow residents to get to their homes and a boat service is ferrying people to and from work and school.

As well as the flood alerts, parts of Scotland have been told to brace for strong winds gusting up to 80mph.

Nazaneen Ghafar, Sky News Weather Presenter, said: "Currently we have low pressure anchored to the north-west of the UK. This area of low pressure will sink south-wards over the next couple of days, and as it does this will change the wind direction to an easterly flow. The easterly winds will bring in very cold air from Europe, where temperatures across Scandinavia are currently well below freezing.

Twitter user Grant Kavanagh took this picture of a mini tornado in Knaphill Surrey. Twitter user Grant Kavanagh saw 'strange weather' in Knaphill, Surrey

"As a result, any showers or spells of rain that meet the cold air will have a greater risk of turning wintry, especially for eastern parts of the UK. Wintry showers are likely and the risk of some overnight snow across northern areas from Wednesday onwards.

"There will also be the continued chance of hail at times, and ice will be an increasing problem."

On Sunday, light snow flurries affected parts of northern England, including in Cumbria, where snow ploughs were used to clear sections of the A66.

A "mini tornado" was reported in parts of the Midlands and southern Britain, where trees were brought down, power supplies knocked out and outbuildings damaged.
