Captain 'Jumped Off Sinking Costa Concordia'

The captain of the Costa Concordia did not fall off the stricken liner into a lifeboat as he claims, but jumped to safety when the vessel started sinking, a court has heard.

Francesco Schettino is on trial for manslaughter, abandoning ship and causing the disaster, which left 32 people dead.

Stefano Iannelli, a trainee officer on board the ship at the time, told the hearing in Grosseto: "We found a lifeboat. I jumped on. Schettino had jumped on just before me."

His testimony would appear to corroborate accusations that the captain headed ashore to ensure his own safety while terrified passengers remained trapped aboard the doomed ship.

Schettino, who is facing up to 20 years in prison if convicted, has insisted he slipped off the Costa Concordia, which was already tilting at a 90-degree angle, and fell into a lifeboat.

The ship was righted in September in a major salvage operation

"We had formed a human chain so as not to slip," Mr Iannelli said as he described the chaos on board, according to Italian media reports.

"I was part of the Tango India support team and we helped at least five injured people."

He said that when he could "no longer see any passengers", he went with Schettino and four others and "found a lifeboat".

"As soon as the lifeboat set off, the ship rolled over and the deck we had been on sank underwater," he said.

"On our way to shore we picked up passengers in the water."

Schettino is accused of steering the 114,000-ton Costa Concordia into the rocky coastline of Giglio on January 13, 2012, during a "sail past" of the Tuscan island.

Some 4,229 people from 70 countries were on board when the vessel struck a reef.
