Stand Up Be Counted At Party Conferences

Written By Unknown on Senin, 22 September 2014 | 23.38

With the party conference season now upon us, thousands of people from across the country will be attending the political gatherings to share their views and hear those of others.

After last week's Scottish referendum, where 16 and 17-year-olds were given the chance to vote, the issue of young voters has never been more relevant.

Sky News' Stand Up Be Counted (SUBC) campaign is a chance for young people to put across their opinions and try to engage more with politics ahead of next year's General Election.

In the 2010 election, only 44% of 18 to 24-year-olds voted.

In that age group, 50% of young men cast their vote, as well 39% of young women.

Sky News is sending two SUBC contributors, Charlene and Michael, to all three main party conferences, who will be giving their perspective on the experience.

They will be talking to MPs and party workers about what they are doing to engage young voters in politics.

Charlene, 21, described the Scottish referendum as "one of the most exciting examples of active politics in recent years".

Michael, 24, said: "The fact is if you can vote at 16 and schools take more of an interest in teaching politics, young people will be better informed and more likely to vote.

"Now the only question is 'when will this be case for the whole of the UK?'."
